Syncline

Alert a Slack channel when a Stripe payment fails

A declined charge reaches the channel in seconds with the customer, the amount and the decline reason, so somebody can call while it still matters.

Trigger: Payment failed
Action: Post a message to a channel
About 3 minutes to set up

How this flow works

Syncline watches Stripe for Payment failed. When that happens it runs Post a message to a channel in Slack with the fields you mapped.

  1. Connect Stripe and choose the payment failed event.
  2. Pick the channel and invite Syncline to it.
  3. Write the alert so it carries the customer, the amount and the reason code.
  4. Run a test mode decline, read the message, then connect the live account.

Field mapping

From StripeTo SlackNote
AmountMessage textMinor units are converted first, so the channel reads 49.00 rather than 4900 with the currency beside it.
Customer emailMessage textThe address is in the message so support can search the channel for that customer weeks later.
StatusChannelA plain decline goes to the finance channel and a dispute goes to escalation, from one flow.
Invoice IDAttachment URLThe invoice reference becomes a link, attached so one click opens the payment inside Stripe.

Why teams run it

  • Failed payments get chased the same day
  • The reason code tells you whether to call or to wait
  • Revenue problems stop being noticed at month end

Who uses it

A customer success lead who would rather ring about a dead card than lose the renewal.

About the two apps

Stripe

Stripe knows the moment money arrives, fails or goes back out. Syncline turns each of those events into something your team can see and act on within a couple of minutes.

All Stripe flows

Slack

Slack is where a team notices things, which makes it the best place to put an alert and the worst place to store one. Syncline sends messages into channels when something happens elsewhere, and turns the replies worth keeping into records.

Questions

How quickly does it arrive?
Stripe pushes events to us rather than us polling, so the gap between the decline and the Slack message is usually a few seconds.
Can I ignore small amounts?
Yes. Filter on the amount and the channel only hears about failures worth a phone call, which for most teams is a big reduction.
